17 Of The Best Anti-Frizz Products For Smooth, Flyaway-Free Hair
If you’re tired of battling frizz and flyaways or just want an easy way to achieve a sleek finish, you need some top-tier, anti-frizz hair products in your arsenal. As someone with a perennial halo of frizz thanks to never-ending baby hairs, I’ve been there myself, but with so many excellent hair formulas on the market, it’s easier than it has ever been to get rid of them.
Whether Olaplex or Color Wow Dream Coat, Hershesons’s Almost Everything Cream or Kérastase’s Première Filler Fondamental, the best anti-frizz hair products don’t just de-fluff, they also work on hair health too – think moisture retention, split end-smoothing and improving strength.
Here, hair experts share how to use anti-frizz products for salon-smooth styling. Plus you’ll also find Vogue’s tried and tested favourites for silky shine, definition and strength on all hair types.
Meet the experts:
- Tom Smith, Olaplex artist
- Samantha Cusick, hairdresser at Samantha Cusick London
What causes frizzy hair?
Frizz is typically the result of four main factors: humidity, dryness, genetics and damage. Hair expert Cusick explains that hair is hygroscopic — meaning it naturally absorbs moisture from the air. In humid conditions – where there are a high concentration of water molecules – the hair absorbs that excess moisture, which causes the hair shaft to swell, cue frizzy texture.
Frizz can also stem from dryness. As Smith notes, when hair lacks moisture, it seeks hydration from the environment, causing strands to puff up. Hot or windy weather can strip moisture from the hair cuticle, making frizz even more noticeable. If you’ve noticed your hair becoming frizzier over time, dryness could be to blame. As we age, the scalp produces less sebum — the natural oil that nourishes hair — leaving strands drier, more brittle and prone to frizz.
Then there are your genetics. Wavy, curly or coily hair types are more susceptible to frizz because they “have a more uneven cuticle surface, which allows moisture to penetrate and disrupt the hair’s smooth structure,” explains Cusick. Similarly, when hair is damaged (from things like excessive heat styling, harsh chemical treatments, stripping shampoos and friction from rough handling) the cuticle can become porous and more susceptible to excess moisture absorption, which leads to frizz.
Do anti-frizz products really work?
Whatever the cause of your frizz, good haircare can make a big difference. “Most anti-frizz products work by filling in cracks in the cuticle, allowing the hair to retain moisture and stay smooth for longer,” says Smith. By nourishing dry hair, smoothing raised cuticles and shielding strands from humidity and rain, the best anti-frizz products really do work.
What to consider before buying
There is plenty of haircare ranges out there promising sleeker, shinier locks, but to find anti-frizz hair products that actually work, pay attention to the ingredients. “Despite what you may have heard, good silicones are some of the best ingredients for hair smoothness and silkiness,” Smith says, adding that along with film formers, they’re very effective at sealing gaps on the cuticles for smooth hair that’s really shiny. Look out for dimethicone (a silicone-based ingredient) and copolymer (a film-forming agent) on ingredients labels.
If your hair is quite coarse, both Smith and Cusick also recommend trying a nourishing natural oil (think: sunflower seed and coconut oil) as these “create a protective barrier that reduces moisture absorption from the environment.” Bond-building technology is widely considered the gold standard in repairing damage, but to avoid damaging your tresses altogether? Don’t neglect your wider hair regimen. Prevent friction and breakage with silk pillowcases and scrunchies, opt for gentler shampoos, and take care when towel drying and brushing hair to keep the cuticle smooth.
