Investing in a new coat can feel like a mighty big undertaking, as not only is this a big purchase, but it will also act as a cornerstone of your winter wardrobe for years to come. When it comes to outerwear, timeless, simple coats have dominated the runways in recent years, which make for sensible, enduring style additions. Think: a black or navy longline wool coat, a belted trench or a buttery leather overcoat – silhouettes that will layer seamlessly over any of your winter outfits.

There are thousands of coats on the market right now, but to narrow down your search, we’re focusing on the coat brands that have a celebrity following. While this list includes industry heavyweights, including The Row, Bottega Veneta and Burberry, honourable mentions must also go to The Frankie Shop and Toteme – both of which are brands that sit within the contemporary bracket and have spearheaded many coat trends. (The latter’s scarf coat has been a street-style favourite since it was first introduced in 2021.)
Here, Vogue highlights 11 coat brands that the most fashion-forward celebrities rely on.
Burberry
Burberry’s classic trench coats have been a mainstay in popular culture for over 100 years – as Vogue’s shopping editor Joy Montgomery previously wrote: “Burberry’s IMDb page would rival Michael Caine’s.” However, it’s not just the gabardine styles that are worth your attention: Olivia Dean, Raye and Rosie Huntington-Whitely have backed Daniel Lee’s equally-covetable wool creations.
Saint Laurent
When it comes to razor-sharp outerwear, Saint Laurent is, quite literally, a cut above the rest. Under Anthony Vaccarello, the house has perfected a language of sleek, directional coats. Lily Collins recently stepped out in Paris wearing a rich brown Saint Laurent car coat, which would make a timeless investment piece for 2026. When it comes to other styles, expect strong shoulders, elongated lines and luxe fabrics.
Barbour
Barbour’s waxed jackets and coats aren’t just a Balmoral classic – they’ll forever be regarded as the unofficial coat of Glastonbury and an Indie Sleaze favourite, as seen on Lily Allen and Kate Moss over the years. The brand remains relevant by giving its heritage styles modern twists, thanks to collaborations with the likes of Ganni and Alexa Chung.
Leset
A newer name on this list, Leset was founded in 2019, with a brand ethos centred around a refined capsule of elevated basics. Dakota Johnson has been spotted in the brand’s ankle-grazing trench coat on multiple occasions, while Ariana Grande paid homage to Glinda in the brand’s satin blush Bobbie coat on the Wicked press tour.
The Row
Enter: The Row. Naturally, Zoë Kravitz is a longtime fan of its sleek wool overcoats, while Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Jennifer Lawrence are often seen in at least one item from the decidedly-minimalist brand. Despite the high price tags, many of the styles currently on The Row’s e-commerce site are sold out or are very low in stock count. If you’re looking for an investment piece, this is the brand for you.
Toteme
You might recognise Toteme’s now-signature shawl coat – which comes in camel, chocolate brown, black and dark grey. Katie Holmes, Selena Gomez and many fashion editors have been seen wearing the cult silhouette, defined for its softly-draped lapels, dropped shoulders and slits at the seams. The brand’s pillowy soft faux-fur-lined puffer, as seen on Jennifer Lawrence, is another style to consider this winter, while the brand’s trench – which Laura Harrier wore in the summer – can be put to use in the colder months by wearing multiple layers beneath.
Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham is the best advert for her own brand, and last month she was photographed in a charcoal grey trench coat from her label’s autumn/winter 2024 collection, which she’s been wearing buttoned up to the top since its launch. Tailoring is core to the DNA of VB, and so every collection includes beautiful cashmere or wool coats that boast directional edge, but also won’t date quickly.
The Frankie Shop
The Frankie Shop creates low-key, everyday pieces – but thanks to well-honed silhouettes, they’re never lacking in appeal. While the tracksuits and oversized shirts have been big business for the brand, it also excels at tailored outerwear. Sadie Sink has recently wore the faux-leather belted trench, while Hailey Bieber and Katie Holmes have been spotted wearing The Frankie Shop’s trenches and camel wool coats, respectively.
Bottega Veneta
Coats were the cornerstone of Matthieu Blazy’s vision at Bottega Veneta. Souped-up trenches in leather and other indulgent fabrics were common appearances on his runways, and in Bottega’s new chapter, under newly-enlisted creative director Louise Trotter, directional coats are still very much on the agenda. Sumptuous double-breasted wool and gabardine trenches, bearing subtle woven intrecciato panelling, were standouts in her debut collection.
By Malene Birger
By Malene Birger may be a quieter name compared to some luxury stalwarts, but nonetheless, it’s become a go-to for great outerwear. Jennifer Lawrence pretty much single-handedly cemented the brand’s cult status after being photographed in its glossy leopard-print coat while pregnant. The brand also has a healthy roster of more understated styles (wool coats, trenches and puffers), cut from premium fabrics.
Coach
Alongside the brand’s bestselling bags, outerwear plays a key role in Coach’s new-gen narrative. Emily Ratajkowski has been spotted in a brown suede trench from the brand; tapping into one of the season’s biggest outerwear trends. With a focus on rich textures, heritage silhouettes and a youthful energy, Coach coats offer a fresh alternative to traditional luxury outerwear.
